Dark Harlequins!

Nick speaking,

Now that the dust has settled on the recently released Dark Eldar Codex, some strange things have been happening! I have noticed a small warp portal opening up around The IDIC Harlequins, it seems like the dark side is calling them...

Well I do have thirty Harlequin models already, so going over to the dark side and trying out a Dark Harlequin army, isn't going to be too difficult. As you can see from the picture above, some of my Harlequins are old school models that I picked up cheap from my local hobby shop. They are just making up the numbers until sometime in the future, when I will get myself some more of the new models.

All the units in my Harlequin army work together so well. You can't target the Harlies at a distance from Veil of tears, so you are left shooting at the Pathfinders with their 2+ cover save, or the three strong toughness eight Wraithlords, and then throwing in Eldard with all the re-rolls from guide, fortune and doom to finish up. When the time is right it's fairly easy to get the Harlequins across the table by ignoring terrain from their flip belts, and then using their hit and run ability.

Now, how to make my thirty Harlequins have as much success with the Dark Eldar Codex as I have had with the Eldar Codex?

Can it be done?

Free Necron and Eldar Army List Editor!

Nick speaking,

The Internet is full of some very talented and generous people, and one of my fellow YouTubers matteo311GameMovies is exactly one of those people. He has made a Necron army list editor for anyone who wants it! I have had a good look at the editor and I have to say I think it's amazing, it even has all the Necron weapon stats on the list.

EDIT: Matt has now updated this editor for the new Necron Codex! Please check out my post here to find out all about it.

I already have a Necron list editor, but it has some errors in it. This one fits the bill perfectly though, and I gave thanks to him in the comment box and jokingly said "would be nice to have an Eldar one". To my amazement I get an email a few weeks later with an Eldar mock up version! That version is now complete (although still being tested) and you can find both army editors at the bottom of his video explaining how to use it

All you have to do is download it, click the options and enable the content, then press run. You will notice the two finished advanced Necron and Eldar editors at the top, but wait, there's more. You will also notice he has added some simple, work in progress editors for many other armies that he is working on as well.

Please go and check it out and support this very generous and talented person, he says the more feedback he gets the faster he works!

IDIC Harlequins Vs Orks Battle Report

Nick speaking,

So it's time for The IDIC Harlequins to take on some Orks, and with my buddies refused tank list ready, we rolled off and got capture and control, pitched battle. I had a lot to think about with two units of flanking Deff Coptas and some Commandos with Snikrot coming in from my board edge, let alone getting over to the other side of the board to contest the Ork objective!

Can my Harlequins remain undefeated?

Eldar Wasp Assault Walker Announced

Nick speaking,

More Forge Wold Eldar announced, and it's a Troops choice that can move 24" and assault!

ELDAR WASP ASSAULT WALKER

Commonly found amongst the raiding forces of the Eldar Corsairs, the Eldar Wasp Assault Walker confers additional protection and manoeuvrability to the pilot. Jump jets are added to the sturdy War Walker chassis to bolster this already potent weapons platform with deceptively swift movement.

Experimental rules for the Wasp Assault Walker can be found here. This model is available to pre-order now and will be despatched week commencing the 28th of February.

This new model doesn't really look that different from the normal War Walker, it has a bigger cockpit and some Forge World star engine bits added to the back, but that's about it. I am sure my normal Walkers will be delighted to come out of the case and stand in as Wasp Walkers!

So how are we going to use this new unit in gaming terms?

How many Razorbacks, how much Fun?

Nick speaking,

So I have built three Razorbacks at the moment for my 2011 Space Wolves project, but how many Razors do I need to make? In my gaming circle we mainly play 1750 points, and I figured that if I did want to go with a full Razorspam list, I would need nine Razorbacks?

This is the type of list I have been working on...

1 x Rune Priest
Living Lightening/Jaws of the world wolf (100)

5 x Grey Hunters - Power Weapon/Meltagun
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (170)

5 x Grey Hunters - Power Weapon/Meltagun
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (170)

5 x Grey Hunters - Power Weapon/Meltagun
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (170)

5 x Grey Hunters - Power Weapon
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (165)

5 x Grey Hunters - Power Weapon
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (165)

5 x Grey Hunters - Power Weapon
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (165)

6 x Long Fangs - 5x Missile Launchers/Pack Leader
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (215)

6 x Long Fangs - 5x Missile Launchers/Pack Leader
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (215)

6 x Long Fangs - 5x Missile Launchers/Pack Leader
1 x Razorback - Las/Plas (215)

1750 Points

With fifteen split fire missiles, nine lascannons and six troops in transports, this is the sort of list, along with the Thunderwolf version, that seems to be the "auto win" lists unlocked from the Space Wolves Codex, but does it have the fun factor?

Is a copy and paste Razorspam list really the way to go? After all I don't want to just win, I want to have fun at the same time?

My Winged Hive Tyrant

Nick speaking,

As I sifted through my Tyranids to see what to paint next, it occurred to me that since the new Codex has come out my Winged Hive Tyrant hasn't seen daylight! In actual fact there isn't even a picture of it anywhere on my Blog, so here we go with a Hive Tyrant post...

First, a quick back story of my Tyranids. I bought my Nids from a buddy of mine very cheap, a huge box of mainly third edition Nids, mostly unassembled and cut of the sprue. In the box were all the bitz to make two Hive Tyrants...

First I made a foot Tyrant...

I got my Nids in a time when you could upgrade the model with flesh hooks, extended carapaces and enhanced senses. It was also in the hay day, when you could order any bitz you wanted direct from GW, so I got myself some wings and started to make a flying version...

I know I have had these things for sometime, but I have had so many other projects on the go, I am only now thinking about getting them painted! The question is, when I get this model all done, how am I going to use it?

I don't really have many winged things to make a full winged list, but could I get a winged Hive Tyrant into a Null deployment type list? Maybe deep strike it in along with my Carnifexes in Spores?

Or maybe I could use it as a Harpy? Is it big enough?

Anyone out there using Winged Hive Tyrants? What sort of lists are you using them in and how effective have they been?

13th Company Lukas the Trickster Conversion

Nick speaking,

Having just purchased Lukas the Trickster with a GW voucher I got for Christmas, it was time to convert him into a 13th Company Space Wolves version...

I have replaced some of my 13th Company Wulvenkind armour with Black Legion and Emperors Children's armour, as per the Eye of Terror fluff. I didn't want to cut up the original model too much, and decided that Lukas would look pretty cool with just a pink shoulder pad as a point of difference.

First I cut off the orginal shoulder pad on the plasma pistol arm, making sure that I didn't ruin the pad, it's a great looking pad and I will try to use it on a different model in the future. I also wanted to change the angle of the gun and make his arm a bit straighter than the original model. I cut the pistol off and found a few spare bitz in my bitz box that I had. I found an old Space Marine bike arm spare which was perfect for the angle I wanted...

Then all I had to do was glue it all together...

Space Wolves Madness - Bjorn and the Trickster!

Nick speaking,

I know it's been a while since my fellow blogger Fritz 40k posted his Space Wolves Madness! post, but this post did stick in my mind, and now that I am getting my Space Wolves army up together, it was time to revisit his question....

"Why aren’t you guys playing Bjorn and Lukas the Trickster?"

If you don't want to click the link above, this is what Fritz's had to say...

"Here is what I’m thinking and seeing with the two…
Wolves like to get up close and go to town. While the army can have the full complement of ranged support, the codex encourages in your face play, as it should, for Russ’ sake being Space Wolves and all. However, the meta game of 40K as always conflicts with the fluff in the codexes. Your space barbarian horde is not going to arrive intact on the other side of the table unless you have a way to crack open transports on the way in so your hunters and claws can assault the heck out of them.
Bjorn with a las cannon fits in perfectly- twin linked 2+, AV 13, and a 5+ invul save alone is worth the price of admission. Put him in cover and plink away, and then when your opponent closes counter attack with his dreadnought close combat arm, insane attacks and AV 13/5+ invul save.

Oh, and on top of that uberness you get to re-roll to see who goes first. Now, it is a self serving question, but I fully know why most ‘wolf players (any?) don’t take him. They look at the points and say that he will never make them back before he dies. Guys, stop thinking of 40K as a war game about killing models! Look at what Bjorn can do outside of killy! He can auto-create a freaking objective marker! And in a game where two of the three standard missions, and even at tournaments, that is HUGE. I don’t want to give everything away, but consider this…

Capture and Control mission. Your objective on one side, your opponent’s on the other. Break it down real simple- you are going to send out X units to take/contest your opponent’s and they are going to try and do the same to you. The actual mechanics of how you are going to do this doesn’t matter- skimmers, infiltrators, brick in the face, etc.

Well, what if you just camped everything on your objective- your entire army defending against the percent that your opponent has decided to send out to capture/contest your objective. I personally like those odds! My entire army vs. a smaller portion of my opponent’s. Well, with Bjorn in the mix, and getting him killed by turn four, when he “dies” he becomes an objective. Now I have two on my side, (Bjorn is chilling in my back ranks and plinking away with the las cannon) that I’m camping on- how can you really loose? Seize ground gets even sillier. How are Space Wolf players not abusing this? How has GW not FAQ’ed it?

Lukas the Trickster.

I’m playing this guy just so I can say “You just got punked by the Trickster!” to my gaming friend. With everything else being at a super reduced point cost in the codex- Grey Hunters, Razorbacks, etc. the Trickster upgrade is nothing. Take the Trickster and put him in a small squad of claws and ram him right into your opponent’s uber unit and watch him get killed. Then it is a dice off to make those base to base units go poof. A dice off none the less, but I like those odds, and the fact that an aware opponent caught up in mix/max point values will be running his uber point cost unit away from the Trickster afraid of what could be."

So as I am still working on my Space Wolves ideas, I thought I would give both Bjorn and Lukas a go and see what sort of list I could come up with. Please bear in mind that I only have three Razorbacks and one Rhino to work with currently, and I have had to base it around that...

This is the list as it stands at the moment:

1 x Wolf Lord/Frost Blade/Storm Shield/Runic Armour/Warrior Born/Thunderwolf
2x Fenrisian Wolves
(275)

4 x Thunderwolf Cavalry
1x Pistol
1x Storm Shield/1x Pistol
1x Boltgun
1x Storm Shield/Frost Blade
(285)

1 x Bjorn/Lascannon
(290)

5 x Blood Claws
1 x Lukas the Trickster
1 x Rhino/Extra Armour
(280)

5 x Grey Hunters/Power Weapon/Meltagun
1 x Razorback/Las-Twin Plasma
(170)

5 x Grey Hunters/Power Weapon/Meltagun
1 x Razorback/Las-Twin Plasma
(170)

5 x Grey Hunters/Power Weapon
1 x Razorback/Las-Twin Plasma
(165)

5 x Long Fangs/4x Missile Launcher/1x Pack Leader
(115)

Points 1750

The basic concept (capture and control/seize ground) would be to lay down the Las/Missiles whilst potentially sending out the Lord, Calvary and Lukas Rhino to make it look as if I am attacking/moving out for objectives. They will be my main distraction units, with some fun from Lukas and his last laugh, who knows they may even end up contesting if still alive as well. I will then make Bjorn and his Lascannon a threat to try and get him killed for the extra objective on my side, mid game. Ignoring my opponents objective, Grey Hunters stay inside the Razors using chaining, terrain, smoke, and parking lot to stay up best as poss, waiting to grab/contest!

I originally wanted to get a unit of Scouts in there as well, but to get them in would mean a reduction in points on the Thunderworf unit somehow? In the end, even though I know the power of the Scout unit, I figured that if I am not actually making a real play towards my opponents objective, the scouts could be a waste of points anyway?

So what do you think?
