Eldar Saim Hann Vs Space Marines (1850pt WH40K BatRep)

Nick speaking,

Here is my first game with my revamped Saim Hann list to include my newly painted War Walkers. I am using a new support system for the camera in this battle report so I hope you can see the difference. I still have good movement with it, but it should reduce the camera shake somewhat...

Eldar Saim Hann List with my new War Walkers

Nick speaking,

Here is my updated Saim Hann list with my newly painted War Walkers in it. I haven't had the new Eldar Codex that long, and so far I have only been playing an adapted list from the old Codex, so fitting them into my Saim Hann themed list was quite easy. I was maxed out with Holo-Fields in my previous list and dropping all those fields gave me a good amount of points to play with. Really happy with the changes I have made, but of course I am still experimenting.

Warlock Psychic Power Markers!

Nick speaking,

With my determination to keep the Seer Council in my Saim-Hann list for now, I need to figure out a way to keep track of all those powers. Although I would love to have little discrete magnetised markers of some sort, I am as yet, still not convinced of the future of the Seer Council in my army, so I came up with this template of markers, just to get me going. Please feel free to contact me if you would like a copy of the template. Saim-Hann battle report to follow...

Eldar Saim-Hann at 2k

Nick speaking,

During the period of 6th Edition dropping and the new Eldar Codex being released, my Saim-Hann army didn't really see the light of day. I found it hard to get motivated to put those Vypers and Falcon on the table, and so I turned towards my full Mechdar and Footdar lists instead. So with the new Codex dust all settled down, I want to take a look at my old Saim-Hann list and see if I can get it going again...

Ok, so here is my old 5th Edition Saim-Hann list, I had a lot of success with it back in the day, mainly because the Falcon was scoring and the tanks were very survivable, along with the all reserve/turn five concept that used to be...

IDIC Hann 1750 pts, 5th edition list...

My first port of call, was to translate this list unit by unit from the new Codex, to see how it would look. Whilst I was doing this, I made a few tweaks, like a Dire Avenger Exarch with a Shimmershield for the Falcon, as that unit will need to disembark to be able to score, and the 5++ will help a little. Interestingly, the new 'copy and paste' list is 203 points cheaper than it was before, and that is with the more expensive Dire Avengers and Vypers, due to holofields...

IDIC Hann, 1750 pts, 'copy and paste' list

HQ

5 x IDIC Warlock/Jetbikes (250)

1 x IDIC Falcon/SL/Cannon/Stone/Holofield (170)

1547 points!!

So, with that and the move up to 2k points that my buddies and I have made, I now have 453pts left to spend, bonus! I don't want to mess around with the list too much at this moment in time, as I want to get a good feel of the changes and go from there. At the moment the list only has three troop choices, so first of all I want to address that. More bikes are my first thoughts, but I only own twelve bikes at the moment, so that rules that out for now. Next stop has to be troops in a Wave Serpent, maybe Guardians or Storm Guardians, but I think I want to stick with ten Dire Avengers, the longer ranged guns and 5++ Shimershield does it for me.

Now I know that I could drop the Falcon and have two Serpents with eight Dire Avengers in each, but the Falcon has always been a favourite of mine, and now that it hits on three's instead of four's, I want to give it a fair outing before I ditch it for a second Serpent.

Next is the Seer Council, I will keep the council as it is, but I am planning for the Council to have a different role on the battlefield. With the random powers it now has, nothing is going to be set in stone, it will either be as good as or even better than it was in the old days, or it could end up just being an expensive jetbike squad that can't score. So, with that said, I don't want the Farseer in that unit to be my Warlord, just in case the dice gods don't favour me! No, the Warlord role is going to have to go to the faithful Jetbike Autarch with Mantle.

I know it's not a perfect list, but I think it's a good starting point to get the Saim-Hann back on the table, which I am very much looking forward to. Battle reports to follow...

How will 6th Edition effect my Saim-Hann Eldar?

Nick speaking,

One thing I love about the Eldar is their versatility when it comes to making lists, and that's the main reason I gave my Eldar the name IDIC Eldar. These pointed ear Vulcan type dudes really live up to the Vulcan philosophy of Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. In my mind I actually have three Eldar armies, a Saim-Hann jetbike themed army, a Harlequin themed army and a Hybrid army. In today's post though, I want to have a look at the IDIC Hann...

As you can see from the picture above, the starting point of my army is a Jetbike Seer Council. I have been experimenting with swapping the Farseers powers, but in all honesty, without Fortune, the Council really loses what it needs to keep it up as long as possible. I have concluding that it's not really worth dropping your Doom and Fortune for the random powers, unless you have more than one Farseer on the table.

Both the Council and the standard Jetbikes have a huge range of movement now, and it's especially useful that you can now cast fortune and turbo boost the same turn. With my five Dire Avengers in the Falcon now having issues with being a scoring unit, the Jetbikes are even more important to my army now, more than ever. I am seriously going consider putting in an Embolden Warlock in each group of Jetbikes, and it wouldn't surprise me if I ended up having to buy some more Jetbikes for my list in the future. Talking of Embolden, have you checked out Embolden40k Blog yet? If not, please go and have a look after you have finished reading and commenting here.

As for Vypers, so far it all looks even worse for these flying beauties. Not that they were the best unit before, but they really do fit in with the Saim-Hann theme so well. OK, so we now have a 5+ cover save for just moving and 4+ if we move instead of shooting as before, but we can now move 12" and shoot all our guns at normal ballistic skill. The main extra issue with these guys is both the rubbish two hull points and the new vehicle damage chart modifiers, +3 to the chart if AP1 and +2 to the chart if AP2, as we are open-topped. Ouch, that really hurts, and a 5+ save really doesn't make up for it. I am not writing Vypers off in my list, as I really like the models and they fit into the list too well for instant dismissal, but some new tactics are going to be needed for them, if they are going to work.

My first thoughts are that the two Fire Prisms are staying in my list. The new blast rules and random weapon destroyed results are going to help these two do damage. I don't think it's worth having Holo-Fields on them anymore though, as three Glancing/Penetrating hits will wreck it anyway. Better to spend the points on Warlocks for the Jetbikes instead. The main issue with them and any Eldar Tank now, is the lack of objective contesting, and long range tank shocking. In 5th Edition, I rarely had the big gun left intact, but they were nearly always around at the end of the game with their Holo-Fields, ready to contest objectives, and I think this is the biggest draw back any Mech Eldar list is going to have.

Now we come onto the Falcon, which was once the most survivable scoring tank in the game, is now just basically a gun boat. Is it even worth putting anything inside it? I think the Falcon is still great, but the only reason I took it over a Wave Serpent, was to have a solid Scoring unit in case my Jetbikes went down, and with the Holo-fields, it very often did score. Maybe it is time to change it over for a Wave Serpent, with a twin linked gun instead. To be honest, unless the Falcon was guided, it didn't really shoot very well anyway! The question is, what to put in the Serpent? I want it to have Troops, so it's either Storm Guardians or Dire Avengers?

One thing I want to quickly add in here, is how happy I am that Shining Spears have had a bit of a boost in 6th Edition. They are still over priced, but then again isn't everything Eldar? The main reason I mention Shining Spears, is from a previous post I did a while back, where I talked about how much I liked the Shining Spear models and paint scheme. Now with a Skilled Rider Exarch, they are actually a potential option for me!

Well, that's my initial thoughts for my IDIC Hann from what I have seen so far. I haven't put any of this into an actual list yet, as my buddies and I are still experimenting with 1k point games until we get use to the new rules.

Any thoughts and comments are most welcome, as usual...

Last Saim-Hann list tweaks (for now anyway)

Nick speaking,

My current Saim-Hann list is based around all the units I currently have painted. I do intend to switch things about as I gradually paint up other units, but until then, I am working around my painted stuff only. Here is my previously tweaked list, which I am currently working on painting the last five Dire Avengers for at the moment...

HQ
1 x IDIC Farseer Jetbike with Spear/Doom/Fortune/Guide/Warding/Witnessing/Stones (208)
4 x IDIC Warlock Jetbikes with Spear/Destructor (232)
1 x IDIC Warlock Jetbike with Witchblade/Embolden (50)

TROOPS
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes with 2x Shuriken Cannon (152)
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes with 2x Shuriken Cannon (152)
5 x IDIC Dire Avengers (60)
1 x IDIC Falcon with Missile Launcher/Shur Cannon/Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines/Holofield (225)

FAST ATTACK
2x IDIC Vypers with Star Cannon/Shuriken Cannon (160)
2x IDIC Vypers with Scatter Lasers/Shuriken Cannon (140)

HEAVY
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Shur Cannon/Stone/Star Engines/Holofield (185)
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Shur Cannon/Stone/Star Engines/Holofield (185)

1749 points

I am pretty happy with the list, but I have come across a few last tweaks that I seem to need. Armour thirteen and up, does cause me problems, I know I can combine my Prism beams to get to Strength ten, but with three Soul Grinders in one of my opponents list and Land Raiders floating about, I feel I need to get a Lance weapon in the list as well. I currently have the Missile launcher on the Falcon so that I can have the option to move 12", and still fire the strength four Plasma, but I think I am going to have to switch the gun over to a Bright Lance instead. It's not as great as on a twin linked Wave Serpent, but hopefully I will be able to guide it at the beginning of the game anyway.

So why no Wave Serpents? Well mainly as I haven't painted them yet, but also, I just love Holofields. The Falcon can be made scoring with just five Dire Avengers, sit back and gun down stuff, drop the Avengers off on an objective and then contest if needed, and of course it can tank shock. That's why I only have two Jetbike squads instead of the usual Saim Hann three. I prefer a Troops choice in a tank to another Jetbike unit, for now anyway.

The last tweak is on the Seer Council. Although I love the Singing Spear locks for the versatility, one attack in close combat just doesn't cut it, compared to the Whichblade's two attacks. This is even more noticeable when you charge in with the blades, giving you three attacks on the charge is actually quite good...

Now my final list looks like this, for now anyway! Any comments and thoughts welcome...

HQ
1 x IDIC Farseer Jetbike with Spear/Doom/Fortune/Guide/Warding/Witnessing/Stones (208)
4 x IDIC Warlock Jetbikes with Witchblade/Destructor (220)
1 x IDIC Warlock Jetbike with Spear/Embolden (53)

TROOPS

IDIC Hann Eldar List Tweaks

Nick speaking,

It's been a while since I gave an update on my current Saim Hann styled army list which has gradually been evolving as it's being painted. Looking back, the last time I posted my IDIC Hann list was a year ago, when I was just putting it together...

Here is my original list with an update on where I have gone with it...

HQ
1 x IDIC Farseer Jetbike with Spear/Doom/Fortune/Guide/Warding/Witnessing/Stones (208)
5 x IDIC Warlock Jetbikes with Spear/Destructor (290)
The Farseer has stayed the same, but I have tweaked the Warlocks a bit due to the unit running of the board once! I now have one Warlock with Embolden and a Witchblade, dropping the Spear to stay under points as I ended up two points over at the end.

TROOPS
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes with 2x Shuriken Cannon (152)
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes 1x Shuriken Cannon (142)
I noted in the original post that I wanted to have an extra Suriken Cannon on the Jetbikes, and I have now fitted that in. I have thought about going for three Jetbike units, but having a troops tank option seems to be a bit better, giving me protection and the ability to tank shock anyone off objectives.

10 x IDIC Guardians with Shuriken Cannon (85)
1 x IDIC Wave Serpent with Scatter Laser/Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines (160)
I originally had Guardians in a Serpent, because I had my Guardians painted, but I knew It wasn't ideal and that I would eventually go with Storm Guardians instead. Although I will end up with a version of my list with a Wave Serpent, I have currently exchange the Serpent for a Falcon with five basic Dire Avengers in it. I chose the Falcon because a) It's already painted b) It's difficult to damage with the it's Holofields. I armed it with a Missile launcher and Shuriken Cannon.

FAST ATTACK
2x IDIC Vypers with Star Cannon/Shuriken Cannon (160)
2x IDIC Vypers with Star Cannon/Shuriken Cannon (160)
Star Cannons are nice but expensive, and with so many cover saves around Scatter Lasers seem to be the better option! However at the moment I am running one unit with Scatter Lasers and one with Star Cannons to mix things up a bit. The Shuriken Cannon at the front stays for sure.

HEAVY
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines/Holofield (195)
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines/Holofield (195)
With all the list tweaks I have now managed to fit a Shuriken Cannon on each of my Fire Prisms so that they can still shoot if the Prism Cannon gets blown off! I have also dropped the Vectored engines as I feel they are just too expensive and don't earn their points back.

My list now looks like this:

HQ
1 x IDIC Farseer Jetbike with Spear/Doom/Fortune/Guide/Warding/Witnessing/Stones (208)
4 x IDIC Warlock Jetbikes with Spear/Destructor (232)
1 x IDIC Warlock Jetbike with Witchblade/Embolden (50)

TROOPS
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes with 2x Shuriken Cannon (152)
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes with 2x Shuriken Cannon (152)
5 x IDIC Dire Avengers (60)
1 x IDIC Falcon with Missile Launcher/Shur Cannon/Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines/Holofield (225)

FAST ATTACK
2x IDIC Vypers with Star Cannon/Shuriken Cannon (160)
2x IDIC Vypers with Scatter Lasers/Shuriken Cannon (140)

HEAVY
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Shur Cannon/Stone/Star Engines/Holofield (185)
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Shur Cannon/Stone/Star Engines/Holofield (185)

Just the Seer Council and Dire Avengers to paint before this list is totally painted and I can get to work on my Night Spinner turrets!

Saim-Hann @ 1000pts

Email in:

I have just started an Eldar army myself and decided on a Saim Hann theme. Can you recommend an army list of 1000 pts against Blood Angels?

Reply out:

Nick speaking,

I would keep my thoughts towards a more general list rather than a dedicated anti BA list. I would suggest something like this:

1 x Wave Serpent (90) Shuriken Cannon (10) Spirit stone (10)
(110)
10 x Storm Guardians (80) 2x Fusion Pistol (12)
(92)
1 x Farseer (55) Fortune (30) Runes of witnessing (10)
(95)

6 x Guardian Jetbikes (132) 2x Shuriken Cannon (20)
(152)

6 x Guardian Jetbikes (132) 2x Shuriken Cannon (20)
(152)

1 x Fire Prism (115)

2 x Vypers (90) Scatter Laser (30) Shuriken Cannon (20)
(140)

2 x Vypers (90) Scatter Laser (30) Shuriken Cannon (20)
(140)

Points 999

These are the type of Saim-Hann units you will need to start practising with to see how they all work together. Remember that winning is not about how many models you can kill, it is about being in the right place at the right time, and a fast move Eldar army has every chance of doing that.

Good luck

IDIC Hann Eldar List

Nick speaking

Here is my current Eldar Saim-Hann style 1750 List. It is still in the tweaking stages, which I will talk about in a minute. Being Saim-Hann styled I am using the usual Eldar mech trickery of course, with reserving and last turn contesting being the main tactic.

This is the list:

HQ
1 x IDIC Farseer Jetbike with Spear/Doom/Fortune/Guide/Warding/Witnessing/Stones (208)
5 x IDIC Warlock Jetbikes with Spear/Destructor (290)

TROOPS
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes with 2x Shuriken Cannon (152)
6 x IDIC Guardian Jetbikes 1x Shuriken Cannon (142)
10 x IDIC Guardians with Shuriken Cannon (85)
1 x IDIC Wave Serpent with Scatter Laser/Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines (160)

FAST ATTACK
2x IDIC Vypers with Star Cannon/Shuriken Cannon (160)
2x IDIC Vypers with Star Cannon/Shuriken Cannon (160)

HEAVY
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines/ Holofield (195)
1 x IDIC Fire Prism with Stone/Vectored Engines/Star Engines/ Holofield (195)

Points 1747...

Idealy, I would like to have the Shuriken Cannon upgrade on the Serpent, two Prisms and an extra one on a Jetbike. That's 40pts and could be achieved by down grading the Star Cannon's on the Vypers to Scatter Lasers! I would gain more shots in exchange for the AP2! But is the switch worthwhile?

I also would prefer to have Storm Guardians in the Serpent, with my list I can fit 10 of them in with only one upgrade! I am thinking the upgrade would have to be a Fusion Pistol? But again is this a good switch or should I be looking at a bigger change to the list to get a squad of ten with two flamers and a Warlock with Destructor? Of course I have to keep in mind that the squad in the Serpent is only there to make it scoring!

Battle reports for this list to follow...
