Upcoming 40k Game Against Table Top Banter

Nick speaking,

I am really having a lot of fun playing 40k with people I have met via the Wargaming YouTube community. So far I have played Aceface and Commissar Warwick. Now though, it's time to face off against Callum from Table Top Banter. This game isn't going to be quite as competitive than my previous ones, as we are just going to have some fun on the table, and what better fun than to play my Nidzilla army!

Callum hasn't played a lot of 40k in the great scheme of things, and he has never played against Tyranids, so that was another reason for me to get them on the table for him to see them in action. We decided on fifteen hundred points for this game, so I had to have a look at my list to drop it down in points. Here is the list I will take, battle report to follow soon...

Endless Stinger Swarm (2500pt List)

Nick speaking,

I am sure you may remember me posting about The 3k Game I had with my buddy Aceface. It was an epic game with my Necrons taking on his Hive Fleet. We rolled the Relic, which I grabbed with my Wraiths turn one and held on for dear life until the game ended. I got a win, but was probably quite lucky with the mission, if you consider all the nastiness that he had on the table!

Since then, Aceface has been working on a new Tau army, and not only does it look fantastic, he is having a lot of success with his list on the table. Check out the link here if you want to find out more on that. Of course, I am writing this post to let you know that we have another game scheduled, and although I don't know for sure, I am suspecting the Tau to make an appearance. The only things I do know, is that we will play 2500 points and will have a go at the Maelstrom missions.

Ace has seen both my Eldar and Necrons in action, so I suppose it's about time I got out my Nids for him to see. Going up against a very experienced Nid player with my Nids, as he commands a very Strong Tau army doesn't sound too promising to me, so I need to come up with something different to counter both of these disadvantages!

I already know the way Ace likes to play, lots of big nasty units and guns, and that is how he plays his Nids. I have played a few Nidzilla games recently myself, but this time I am going all out swarm. I figure I am not going to win a shooting match against his three Riptides and other nasty guns, so why bother to compete there? Oh no, I am thinking flood the board with as many little bugs as I can and see how he copes!

As we are playing a Maelstrom mission, that will help me too, lots and lots of units to grab points at the start of the game, and from then on to just stay alive until the game ends. Minimum unit sizes will make him waste a lot of his over powered guns on killing just five bugs, so hopefully I will have a chance to survive. I can't go without my three Mawlocs, my favourite Nid unit in both looks and fun, plus they will help add a little distraction as the Swarm advances!

Using the Endless Swarm formation to boost my numbers as I die, this is the final list for the game. It's going to be very interesting and a lot of fun, even if Ace doesn't bring his Tau...

1750 Point Nidzilla List

Nick speaking,

I am always thinking about new fun lists to play and surprise my opponents with, so here we go with a Nidzilla themed list. It all came about when I got thinking about my three Mawloc models, they are all magnetised, but so far I have only ever used them as Mawlocs! So, with those thoughts in my head, I went ahead and made a list for three Trygons and lots of other MCs. I was limited to the models I actually own, but with using two detachments and Rippers for troops, I was able to get eight big gribblies into the list...

Nidzilla (v1) 1750pts

Primary Detachment

HQ
1 x Flyrant/Devourers (230)
1 x Flyrant/Devourers (230)

TROOPS
3 x Rippers (36)
3 x Rippers (36)

HEAVY
1 x Trygon Prime (230)
1 x Trygon Prime/Regeneration (260)
1 x Trygon (190)

Secondary Detachment

HQ
1 x Old One Eye (220)

TROOPS
3 x Rippers (36)
3 x Rippers (36)

HEAVY
1 x Carnifex (120)
1 x Carnifex (120)

1744 points

The plan will be to stick the three Trygons at the front with the Fexes behind them and push forward from the off, along with the Flyrants swooping forward on turn one. Basically charge and have fun, leaving the Rippers to reserve for objectives!

Painting Challenge Nid List

Nick speaking,

As I am sure you are aware, I have been hard at work painting a few Nid units recently, so once again I have 'finished' my Nid army, for now, anyway! I managed to get a lot done in just under a month, and I thought it would be pretty cool to make an army list to include all the latest finished units, this includes, Old One Eye, ten Genestealers, two Broodlords, three Hive Guard, a Harpy and a Toxicrene...

I also completed three Tyrannocyte conversions just before the challenge, so I thought it would be good to get them in the list too! Lots of restrictions I know, but it's going to be fun and maybe a test of my gaming skills!

OK, so here is the list I came up with, lots of deep striking fun with some core unit behind a defense line to hold the fort until they get there. Hopefully that will be on turn two with the comms relay!

Painting Challenge List

Endless Swarm with No Monstrous Creatures!

Nick speaking,

It's always fun to have a bit of a change and maybe even a bit of a challenge, and after many games of 40k with my Hive Fleet packed out with Mawlocs, Flyrants, Fexes and Pods, I thought I would have a go at an army with no Monstrous Creatures in it!

So, with no Monstrous Creatures taking up my points, I figured I am going to have a lot of little bugs on the table, which instantly points me in the direction of the Endless Swarm Formation. I haven't really been using formations, but this one seems to be pretty good following on the heals of Skyblight.

The formation consists of three units of Gants, three units of Gaunts and a Warrior Brood, and all these units have a chance to come back onto the board once killed with a fifty percent chance, sounds pretty good to me.

Now I am in no way going for a competitive list, with the whole idea of the army being to have some fun. I know that I could shave a few points off here and there, like dropping a few Devourers out for Flesh Borers on the Devilgants, but overall I like the list I have come up with. The Stealers will infiltrate and everything else will push forward from the outset. There's not too much antitank in there, but there is plenty of Synapse. I am really looking forward to getting this Swarm on the table, as it seems like it is going to be a lot of fun to play, but please let me know your thoughts. Battle report to follow...

Triple Mawloc List!

Nick speaking,

As many of you know, I am a big fan of the Mawloc model, and I have had a double Mawloc Loc List for some time now. Having recently painted my third and final Mawloc, and with Drop Pods back in, I thought it was time to redo my list and update it to a Triple Loc List for 7th Edition.

First of all, in an ideal world, I would like to swap out the Hive Guard for a Hive Crone, but I still have to build and paint mine, so for now the Hive Guard is in. They will sit behind or beside the ADL along with the Tervigon, Gants and Venomthropes Blob. The two Flyrants will move on up and then the three Locs will hit. This list is built for fun and to get three of my favourite minis on the table, but please let me know what you think and all suggestion are most welcome...

Tyranid 'Loc List' is back!

Nick speaking,

So now that my Wraithknight is all done and dusted, I am ready to start work on the Nids. Shelving the bugs was always just going to be temporary, and I am now very excited to play with the little critters again. First though, I needed to come up with an army list, something that I can play test with and get a feel for the new rules...

Flyrants seem very feasible still, and a bit cheaper to run, so I will carry on using dual Flyrants in the HQ slot. Hive Commander seems to be an auto include now, Flanking Gants will at least give a little of what was lost with the now defunct pods. Talking of Gants, and the Devilgant also seems to stack up well, so that will be my main Troop choices, along with some Warriors for Synapse and some jacked up Hormagaunts to see how they perform. I am actually like the idea of Spinefist Rippers now, I know they are not scoring, have gone up in points and can be instant deathed, but deep striking them in could be a nice little distraction unit that we are potentially lacking now...

It seems pretty obvious that Venomthropes are now essential in any Nid list, and Zoanthropes look pretty good to me also, with their usual 3++ and Synapse abilities. Plus, I have to use my Doom of Malan'tai model somehow! I am also liking the dual Mawloc theme, better and worse at the same time, but at least they are cheap now, and it means I can call this first army the same name as before...

Stingerfex Nid List

Nick speaking,

Having recently finished my magnetised Carnifex, I thought I would squeeze him into one of my lists and see how he would perform. I decided to take my Dual Loc list and switch a Mawloc out for him in a pod. I had to tweak the list a little as he is a bit more expensive with his pod, but it still looks like a strong list to me...

2 Flyrants at 2k!

Nick speaking,

So lets talk two Flyrants at 2,000 points! After my buddies and I decided to move our games up to 2k, I got straight onto a second Flyrant conversion. One Flyrant has been a real blast to play and has been working really well for me, so I can imagine how two of them are going to do, double the fun! I figured I would go one choppy and one shooty, with the shooty one being the Warlord, as he won't be landing so often...

I think the best place to start my 2k list, is to build on my 1750pt 'Loc List', which gives me a nice 250 point Flyrant as an add on. Overall my 'Loc List' has performed really well, with the initial concept being built around having two Mawlocs in the list. In all honesty, the Mawlocs haven't really done much for me, the two S6 AP2 large blasts, sound really good, but I find most of the time I am scattering and hitting nothing, then they are just stuck there with no guns and pretty average assault capabilities. By the time it is my next turn, they are either dead or very badly wounded!

I tried regeneration on the Locs a few times, and whilst it is fun and does work sometimes, it's just a bit too random for the points, so I dropped that idea. Of course the Locs aren't all about killing, when your enemy has to deal with them, along with other stuff like Doom and Devilgants, it really does take a lot of focus away from the Spawning Tervigons!

The question is, if I drop the two Locs, which would mean dropping the list name and concept, what do I take in their place? Two dakkafexes maybe? At least they can shoot even if their pod scatters, but then when they are down, they are down, no burrowing! No, I don't think so, regardless of how much the Locs kill, I still think they sit in the list well, after all, my enemy is going to have two Flyrants, two Mawlocs, Doom and a bunch of Devilgants in their face on turn two, well, as long as I don't roll any ones for the reserve rolls, and that is going to be tough to deal with...

Army List Clinic - Tyranid 1850pt Help

Rob speaking,

Thank you to everyone who has submitted their army lists to our Clinic, In today's post we will have a look at a 1850pt Tyranid list for a followers first 6th Edition game...
Email in:

Hiya

Been following your blog for some time, and now my turn has come for 6 ed nids.....(1st 6 ed game also)

So can you help me?
For 1850 points I'm thinking

1 Flyrant with Twin linked Dev
Old adv.
Hive commander
Powers for fancy powers

Hive guard either 2x2 or 1x3

2 Tervigon with max powers for those fancy powers..Iron arm I think its called

10 termagants in spore with Dev
10 termagants in spore with Dev
15 or 20 homogaunts in spore for kicks

15-20 garg. to provide cover for for the Flyrant

3 Biovores

I feel I miss something to take up some firepower while the Flyrants get over the board, and the tervigons makes a kindergarden and hopefully doesn't spawn out.
Maybe trygon or two?
I haven't added points as I don't have my codex on me atm.

Also...
I got my hands on the same spores Nick has, even made some fancy critters out of the beasts inside :)
BUT...I have tried gluing them together....with 4 different kind of glue...
plastic glue, gel instant glue, instant glue and glue used for wood...
No success...so now I tried with a 2 component epoxy glue...
Fingers crossed ;)

I was told by the glue guy that I may experience problems with painting the spore because of what its made off.

How did you do yours?
Cheers

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to email the list clinic, here is the list with changes:

Tyrant – Wings, Hive Commander, Old Adversary 2x Devourers – 310
2x Hive Guard – 100
2x Hive Guard – 100
Doom in pod – 130
15 Termagants with Devourers, in spore pod – 190
15 Termagants with Devourers, in spore pod – 190
Tervigon – Catalist – 175
Tervigon – Catalist – 175
20 Gargoyles – Toxin sacs 140
Harpy – 160
2 Biovores – 90
2 Biovores – 90

Above is the list with similar units you’re using at present, so lets run through the changes:

Hive Guard – keeping them as 2x 2 over 1x 3 for tactical flexibility, Hive Guard are solid in 6th edition, so make a good choice.

Doom in pod – the doom is amazing, I would never leave home without one! They make a good choice for that distraction role you’re looking for. Don’t forget to swap out the Psychic power the doom comes with for the Telepathy Primaris power for double the psychic fun!

15 Termagants – much better than 10, not just the number of shots, but the durability, 10 can easily be removed, even in cover, but 15 make for a much more difficult task.

2 Tervigons with 2 powers each for biomancy fun!

20 Gargoyles – again, great for that distraction roll, with toxin sacs to make them much better in combat which is where they excel!

Harpy – a good cheapish flying MC to go along with the Tyrant, more of a distraction, but still quite useful.

2x 2 Biovores – As they are barrage they are fantastic at sniping out special weapons/sergeants etc, I cannot rate these highly enough!

There you go, 1850pts

This list is a definite alpha strike army, with some solid scoring units backing up that alpha strike!

I’ve dropped the Hormagaunts, even if they are for fun, it’s no fun packing up models time after time without them doing anything. I’ve tried these myself, even 2 units of 20 landing, the squads will just be thinned so much before they can do any/much damage.

Gargoyles are great at providing cover/support for your army as it advances, but they are also great in combat when supporting a Tyrant or Harpy.

Nick Speaking,

Regarding the Spore Pods, I used super glue to glue mine together and it worked really well :) As for painting, just wash them with some nice hot soapy water first, then the primer will spray on with no trouble at all :D

Biovore Fun Battle Reports

Nick speaking,

I have had several attempts at playing my 1750 point Biovore Fun list, but due to unforeseen circumstances it just hasn't happened yet! I did however have a couple of games with a smaller 1200 point version of the list against my sons Space Marines, and then my Buddies Blood Angels. The list is for pure fun, so don't worry about the lack of Scoring units. Here is the list and the two battle reports I did of the games...

Biovore Fun!

Nick speaking,

I have been playing some pretty competitive Nid Lists lately, you know, the usual Flyrant, Hive Guard and Tervigon combos. Having just finished painting my Biovores, and for a break from the norm, I thought I would come up with a fun list to use them in. First, I wanted three groups of Spore Mine Clusters in the list, after all, I want as many Spore Mines out on the table as I can, so the list starts with three groups of five Clusters and a Brood of Biovores...

As I am not too bothered about winning with this army, with the emphasis more on fun. I thought I might as well use Genestealers as the main Troops choice. One large beefed up brood to advance up the field with all the upgrades (gulp), and a Brood Lord to swap out for a couple of Biomancy powers. I will need to give the unit cover saves, so one unit of Ripper swarms to scuttle in front of them should keep the fun theme going nicely.

I will need a small unit of Stealers to sit on an objective in my deployment zone, and that will mean the Biovores will be short of some Synapse. So I will take a Tyranid Prime to join them and keep them shooting every turn. Now to bolster the list, if it's possible! The Large Brood of Stealers are going to be a big target, so I will run forward a Trygon along with them to try and syphon off some shots, I might as well give him Regeneration as well. Sadly I haven't been able to get away from a Flyrant in the list. I really need some extra distractions for the Stealer unit, along with some upfront Shadow of the Warp. I then end the list with a brood of Y-Stealers, just to keep the Stealer and fun theme going.

Here is my final list...

Biovore Fun

HQ
1 x Winged Hive Tyrant/Devourers/Adversary
      *Swap powers for Biomancy (285)
1x Tyranid Prime/Lash Whips and Bone Sword (100)

TROOPS
20x Genestealers/Talons/Glands/Sacs/Brood Lord/Talons/Implant/Acid

Army List Clinic - Tyranid Help

Rob speaking,

Thank you to everyone who has already submitted their army lists to our Clinic, we hope that our responses have given you some pointers and were useful. Our very first army list in for review was from a reader called James, so I just wanted to take the time and say thanks for emailing in your list James, and lets have a look at it.
Email in:

HQ
1 x Flyrant duel Devs, Old Ad.
1 x Tervigon 3 powers Toxin Sacs crushing claws – warlord
Elites
3 x Hive Gaurd
1 x Dom in pod
Troops
1 x Tervigon 3 powers Toxin Sacs
10 x Termagaunts
18 x Devour Gaunts in spore Pod

Thats for a 1250pt tourney in UK, any help would be appreciated.

Firstly, I want to say the list is very solid for its points level. Choosing to take the Tervigon as your Warlord may seem like a good idea, because it is tough to kill, but I don’t believe it is necessar. I think it is a much more sound strategic idea to take the Tervigon as another troops choice, this way you have 2 rock hard scoring Monstrous Creatures that can push forward when needed to take those objectives.

Without much information if this list is working for you or not, it’s quite difficult for us to critique, but if you’re looking for changes/improvements, I will give a couple of ideas where I think the list could be improved by changing wargear, but would require some more models. So, I would be tempted to drop the additional powers on both of the Tervigons, this frees up 60pts to start with, at 1250pts you don’t have many points to play with, the additional powers are nice and vastly increase the chances of Iron Arm, but we have to trim the fat at tournament level. The 60pts dropped can be used to give the first Termagant brood a Spore Pod and Devourers, this then gives you 3 units that will drop in the ever reliable pods right in your enemies face and with the Hive Tyrant Swooping to support them, giving them both Preferred Enemy, you will have a devastating alpha strike. To make this more reliable though, I would then be tempted to drop the crushing claws on the Tervigon that was originally your Warlord and invest the points in Hive Commander on the Hive Tyrant to make your alpha strike that much more reliable.

So with the minor tweaks mentioned above your list should look something like this:

Hive Tyrant w/ wings, dual devourers, old adversary and hive commander - 310
3 Hive Guard – 150
Doom in Pod – 130
Tervigon – 160
Tervigon – 160
13 Devourer Gaunts in Pod – 170
13 Devourer Gaunts in Pod – 170
Total: 1250pts

I hope this helps and thanks for emailing your list in!

Nid Defence Line Battle Report

Nick speaking,

With my new 'Loc List' ready to go with its Defence Line, I was really looking forward to see how the changes would work out. For my first game with the list, I was up against a Blood Angels army with two Librarians and a Librarian Dread, so there was going to be a lot of Psychic powers floating about...

Tyranid 'Loc List' Update with Defence Line

Nick speaking,

Even though my Defence Line is Necron themed, I plan on trying it out with some of my other armies as well. I figured that if my Nids were using a Necron looking Defence Line, it wouldn't look that odd, as the rest of my gaming board is based on Necron terrain anyway. So until I get myself a pukka Nid Defence Line, they will have to use a Necron one that they found on a the battlefield instead.

The list I want to have the Defence Line in is my 'Loc List'. The list has worked well so far, but I think it could really benefit from some cover saves on the Hive Guard, Tervigon and Termagant blob. Now, I don't own a real Tervigon, as my one is converted up, but judging from what I can see with the sizes of the new Tervigon model and the Defence Line, they will be 25% in cover behind the line? If any of my fellow Nid players could confirm that for me please, that would be great.

Here is my original 'Loc List' which after a few comments from my followers, was due for some changes anyway...

One comment was for the inclusion of Hive Commander on the Tyrant, and I like this idea. It will allow me to reserve the two Mawlocs if they find themselves in danger of being taken out turn one. I won't have to worry about burrowing them from the off, as it will almost guarantee they will come out on turn two from reserve, bar rolling ones. It will also get my unit of Devil Gants and other reserves out nice and early as well. To make way for the Defence Line, I will be dropping a unit of Hive Guard and reducing the other two units down to two in each. I think two units of two will be ample enough to do what they need to do and it leaves me an Elites slot open for DoM. The rest of the tweaks were just a few Gants here and there and Death Spitters for the pods, which I have previously found to be quite useful and was an easy way to spend the last few points.

Here is my new 'Loc List' after all the tweaks, battle reports to follow...

Mawloc Battle Report Vs Sisters of Battle

Nick speaking,

This is my first game with the Nid 'Loc List' as previously posted about. I end up playing a Sisters of Battle army with Grey Knights Allies. Draigo and two units of ten Terminators head up this Sisters army, which means I will desperately need first turn so that I can burrow my Mawlocs and make full use of my Hive Guard shots from the off, but can I do it? Here is my list as a reminder...

Mawloc list

Nick speaking,

Right, let’s get on with a list for my Mawlocs, this will be the first time I have used my magnetised Trygon models as Mawlocs, so I am pretty excited at trying them out now that they have had a bit of a boost in 6th Edition. I also want to use this new list to incorporate my recently painted Winged Hive Tyrant, which I also haven’t got around to playing with yet. So that will be my starting point. One Winged Hive Tyrant with twin linked Devourers, Old Adversary and a swap of Psychic powers on the Biomancy table.

For this version one of my ‘Loc List’ I am going to fill out the Elite slots with Hive Guard. I still don’t have the models yet though despite all the hype about them. I have only used them once, and that was with my Warriors as a proxy. I plan on converting my Warriors as Hive Guard anyway, so they can continue as a proxy for now. I am not sure if I will keep them for the list yet though, as I am a big fan of some of the other Elite choices like DoM, Y-Stealers and Death Leaper, but for now they are in.

I am going to stick to my faithful Tervigons as troop choices, just two in this list. They will be backed up with a large brood of Gants to start them off, and a brood of fifteen Devilgants, who will take a pod and deep strike in wherever they are needed, not used Devilgants before, so lots of new stuff in this list for me to try out and I am really liking the sound of the forty five, strength four shots they have.

Lastly will be two Mawlocs, they will start on the table and burrow turn one ready to do their stuff.  I am really looking forward to putting these beasts on the table for the first time and find out how good Terror of the Deep really is! Here is my final first list, battle report to follow soon...

750pt Nids List

Nick speaking,

Every so often my buddies and I will get together for a fun four way battle. We find the easiest mission to play is Space Junk, where you have random, centrally positioned objectives that scatter about. We tend to play 750pts with a minimum of one troop and one HQ, and of course random player turns. Usually, it is a great time to field something that you just want to try out for a bit fun...

Imagine a Deep Striking BA's Land Raider into the middle of the board, or six bare boned Eldar Grav tanks for some fun. Actually, it was one of these games that I first used a Tervigon, and this is what I want to use to expand my 750pt list, after all why play with 750pts like everyone else? Lets get two Tervies on the table and play with 1000pts instead! Well, I don't know what the mathammer is on how many Gants two Tervies will make on average, but you must be able to get 50 out on a good day?

This is the list I have come up with...

1 x Tyranid Prime
1 x Tervigon
1 x Tervigon
10 x Termagants
10 x Termagants
2x Hive Guard
2x Venomthropes

I deploy the two Gant broods up front and around the sides, the two troop Tervigons go behind them, and the Prime joins the Venomthropes behind them, with the Hive Guard deployed to one side, keeping within range of the Prime in case he has to join them. Prime will move between these units depending on who needs help with wound allocation.

Unlike my previous list where I have DoM coming in with a pod, this list will have to move as a massive blob, generating as many disposable troop choices as possible. Hive Guard pop vehicles, and Venomthropes does the usual with the 5+ cover save etc. I basically start off the game moving towards the nearest enemy, and by mid game start getting into position for the objectives in the centre.

What would you use in a 750pt, all on all, fun game?
