Necrons Vs Orks 750pts (game two)

Nick speaking,

After our first 750pt game where I shot out the Orks pretty quickly, I was raring to get my Foot Necron list on the table. My buddy had different ideas though, and he wanted another bite at the cherry against my Mech list. I of course, accepted his challenge and we swapped sides for another game. We ended up just leaving the objectives and terrain in the same places and rolled off to see who would be going first...

My list

Necrons Vs Orks 750pts (game one)

Nick speaking,

Time for some Waaagh...

I had a gaming night the other day with my buddy, and he was keen to try out his Orks for the first time in 6th Edition. We decided to play a few 750pt games using the Battleforce Recon mission rules. We deployed using a standard pitch battle format instead of the corners, as the small deployment zone of the Recon mission is just too small for 750pts, and it seemed to work pretty well this way. I showed up with my Necrons and had two 750pt lists, a Foot list and a Mech list. I rolled a dice and the Mech list came up as the army I would play first...

Footdar First!

Nick speaking,

Right, the next stage for the IDIC Eldar is a foot list. There are a few reasons for me taking my Eldar in this direction. First, I am still unsure how to run my Harlequin themed list in 6th Edition, where two groups of Pathfinders are just not going to cut it anymore. So, I want to try out foot Guardians and Dire Avengers to see how they fair nowadays. As previously discussed, I am also experimenting with Support Weapons at the moment, which could fit into my Harlie list as well.

I already have my 6th Edition Mechdar list tweaked and ready to go, which is where I am aiming all my painting time towards at the moment, getting the final few units finished. My fully painted 5th Edition Saim-Hann army is also in the process of being updated, but that will be for a future post. So why a different foot list? Why not concentrate on the Harlies?

Well, apart from my Harlequin army, which has little points left over after buying thirty Harlequins for experimenting too much, I have never really played a Footdar army, so that is the main reason. I’ve also had a bit of an itch for Footdar recently, after seeing a fair few armies around on the Blogs. One of those armies is based around a Foot Seer Council, with Eldrad and a Farseer rocking their stuff with them. A Footseer really appeals to me because I have never used my Warlocks on foot before, and as I have my Jetbike Warlocks all magnetised to go on foot, I would really love to try them out.

I hope I can gain some extra experience of playing Eldar through this new army concept.  Moving away from Wave Serpents and the like and having all the units on foot sounds like a bit of a Challenge to me, which I am sure will increase my depth of knowledge with the Eldar. Hopefully, this new footlist will also give me some inspiration to help me adapt my Harlequin list as well.

Here is my new list. The Farseers and Warlocks go up front with both Dire Avenger groups either side. Behind them will be two groups of Fire Dragons, with three groups of Guardians behind them. Two support Weapons will give some covering fire with a single Skyleaping Hawk unit. I also have a single War Walker with dual Scatter Lasers, who will flank as a cheap distraction unit. That’s a model count of eighty models compared to the forty four in my Harlequin list, so I am really looking forward to playing this army for the first time...

Mawloc Battle Report Vs Sisters of Battle

Nick speaking,

This is my first game with the Nid 'Loc List' as previously posted about. I end up playing a Sisters of Battle army with Grey Knights Allies. Draigo and two units of ten Terminators head up this Sisters army, which means I will desperately need first turn so that I can burrow my Mawlocs and make full use of my Hive Guard shots from the off, but can I do it? Here is my list as a reminder...

Mawloc list

Nick speaking,

Right, let’s get on with a list for my Mawlocs, this will be the first time I have used my magnetised Trygon models as Mawlocs, so I am pretty excited at trying them out now that they have had a bit of a boost in 6th Edition. I also want to use this new list to incorporate my recently painted Winged Hive Tyrant, which I also haven’t got around to playing with yet. So that will be my starting point. One Winged Hive Tyrant with twin linked Devourers, Old Adversary and a swap of Psychic powers on the Biomancy table.

For this version one of my ‘Loc List’ I am going to fill out the Elite slots with Hive Guard. I still don’t have the models yet though despite all the hype about them. I have only used them once, and that was with my Warriors as a proxy. I plan on converting my Warriors as Hive Guard anyway, so they can continue as a proxy for now. I am not sure if I will keep them for the list yet though, as I am a big fan of some of the other Elite choices like DoM, Y-Stealers and Death Leaper, but for now they are in.

I am going to stick to my faithful Tervigons as troop choices, just two in this list. They will be backed up with a large brood of Gants to start them off, and a brood of fifteen Devilgants, who will take a pod and deep strike in wherever they are needed, not used Devilgants before, so lots of new stuff in this list for me to try out and I am really liking the sound of the forty five, strength four shots they have.

Lastly will be two Mawlocs, they will start on the table and burrow turn one ready to do their stuff.  I am really looking forward to putting these beasts on the table for the first time and find out how good Terror of the Deep really is! Here is my final first list, battle report to follow soon...

Which Eldar Support Gun?

Nick speaking,

So let’s talk about Eldar Support Weapons, and this is where I am looking for some feedback on your experiences as I haven’t really used them before. It seems to me that 6th Edition has made the Support Weapon a serious contender in the Heavy Support slot of the Eldar Codex, especially if you consider how cheap they are. I know they are competing with some other great Heavy Support units like War Walkers, Wraithlords and Fire Prisms, but this is what I am thinking...

The majority of the new standard missions are objective based, so having lots of Troops are key. Eldar troops aren’t exactly expensive, but then again they don’t have your average Marine stat line. Pretty much all Eldar units need some sort of support from the rest of the army, albeit Psychic support or Aspect support. Either way, it isn’t just a case of buying cheap troops and bobs your uncle, you need all the other goodies to go with them to make the army work, and that costs points.

With that in mind, I think the Support Weapon offers a lot for the very cheap points that they are. Maybe they wouldn’t sit too well in a full Mechdar army, but with the switch over to foot armies we are seeing nowadays, they could be perfect for a Footdar list, and that is what I have been looking at. The question is, how many support weapons do you have and which guns to take?

Looking at the three gun options, the Shadow Weaver seems to stand out as the best single gun for the points, and so far it is the only gun I have play tested. Thirty points buys you a single 48” S6 Blast template. It’s never going to kill that much, but it has that great ‘annoying’ factor, just like my Swooping Hawks do. This is what Eldar are all about, and three of them are only going to cost you ninety points!

The D-Cannon is another potential choice, and this is the one that I hear everybody rave about. I have to admit, I do worry about its short 24” range though, but wounding anything on a 2+ with a blast template that is AP2, is pretty good. It also will inflicting instant death on rolls of a six to wound, and has a good chance of taking out vehicles, glancing on a three and four, and penetrating on a five and six. At only fifty points a gun, they do sound pretty good regardless of their short range, but how much fire support are they going to actually bring?

Lastly is the Vibro Cannon, which does have a better range of 36” and uses a cool ‘line’ system, where anything under the line gets hit. The trouble with this gun is it only starts with a base strength of four. The strength does increase by one for each additional Cannon you have in the group that hits, but a maxed out unit of Vibro Cannons will set you back one hundred and fifty points, so not mega cheap.

Like I said, I haven’t really got much experience with these guns on the table myself, so if you have any experiences or views on them yourself, please feel free to share them with me in the comments section below...

Mawloc Time!

Nick speaking,

Watching some units get better is one of the great things about a new edition rule book in 40k. I know of course that some units also get worse, sorry Banshees, but it’s great to find some of my once unused units, get to the point of being pretty good on the table. One such unit being the Mawloc, which I am now very pleased with myself for magnetising up my Trygons to make them interchangeable. I have had some real fun times with my three Trygons, but I think it is now time to switch over those magnetised bits and bring out the Mawlocs...

So what is it about the Mawloc that has changed? Well, compared to a Trygon, it still does suffer from a lower weapon skill and a reduced number of attacks. Although it now has the potential of two attacks on the charge if it’s out of Synapse range and fails its leadership test, which is useful. More importantly though, are the changes to Terror of the Deep!

It’s pretty obvious that there has been a massive drop in the number of vehicles on the table, and we all know the reasons why.  So that means lots and lots of more dudes on foot, which just made that S6 AP2 Large blast a whole lot better, especially with the increased 2+ armour save that is everywhere, due to the majority of power weapons being AP3.  What more can I say, sounds like fun doesn’t it?

IDIC Eldrad is Next...

Nick speaking,

As many of you know, I am a massive fan of batch painting. I personally find it more rewarding than painting one mini at a time. I also find it’s the best way to get an army to all look the same as such, and once a unit is complete, it really feels like a big achievement to me. Having said all that, my next painting project is going to be a single model, and I am actually looking forward to only having one mini to paint. My recently painted Swooping Hawks were a bit of a mission to batch, taking me longer to paint than my three Wave Serpents did. So I am very pleased to have a break from that type of painting and work on a single model this time. See you on the painting table Eldrad...

Eldar Vs Blood Angels (500pt Battleforce Recon)

Nick speaking,

Continuing on from my first game of the Battleforce Recon mission, where I nearly got tabled by a Henchman Grey Knight army. I take my Eldar up against Blood Angels to see if I can do any better. We had a lot of fun playing these 500 point games and if you haven't already tried out the mission, I would recommend you have a go at it...

Eldar Vs Grey Knights (500pt Battleforce Recon)

Nick speaking,

I had my first couple of games of the Battleforce Recon mission the other day. It has to be said that 40k at 500 points is always good fun and it is really great to see that GW has included one of these missions in the 6th Edition rule book. The first game I played on the night was against a Grey Knight force with Draigo, an Inquisitor and two Chimera's (proxy) full of Henchmen. I had my Eldar force ready to go with my much needed Runes of Warding, which hopefully would shut down some of his powers and give me a chance to get my Wraithlord and fortuned Dire Avengers into range. There were a few interesting things I noticed over the course of my two games and the other games I watched that night...

1/ Out of all the games we played we didn't have one assault!

2/ The person who went first always won!

3/ A 4'x4' board with a small deployment zone is surprisingly big when you only have 500pts!

4/ This mission requires decent long range and mid range shooting power, preferably on troops!

Next up, my Eldar take on Blood Angels...

Swooping Hawkes finished!

Nick speaking,

Wow, I had no idea how time consuming these minis where going to be to paint. The amount of time it took to just paint the wings was epic, but I really wanted to do these fantastic looking models some justice, so I put in the time and effort to get them looking as good as I could. I have two units of six with an Exarch in each, giving me the option of a unit of ten, should a new Eldar Codex make it worth while! I am very happy how they have come out, so hopefully you will also like them, they are all metal minis if you're interested to know...
