Nick speaking,
Not so long ago I was reading an interesting post over on Imperius Dominatus about using old models in 40k. Lots of people have their own opinions on using them, with the main issue being the size, as some of the 'classic' minis are smaller than the new ones. At the same time this post went up, I was coincidently having a good look on eBay to try and find myself some old Necron Destroyer models! I have been looking for some of these for a long time now, but I have never really found any at a bargain price for me to buy them, until now...
So why the old models? Well, I for one don't mind some of the older minis, for me, they are a bit of history, and having never owned or seen the old Destroyer mini, I was actually very excited at having some. OK, the model does look aged, but hey, I still like it. I will probably start these off as stand ins for Tomb Blades, which I think the size and shape of the mini works well for. Then if I manage to find myself another three at a good price, I plan on having a whole unit of these as Destroyers in a Destroyer Wing army I am planning, but what would you say if I turned up with two units of Destroyers, one old unit and one new unit? Would you mind?

I think you would be hard pressed to find some one who would mind, granted they are smaller, but so what?
ReplyDeleteI love some of the old models and I once tried to make a 2nd edition box army due to that. We just play with toy soldiers, you can't take it too seriously.
Cool and they would make good Tomb Blades :)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I think you should use them as TombBlades and get all new Destroyers, but that's just because I think the new Destroyers look better. If we were playing and you were mixing them with new Destroyers and old Destroyers, I wouldn't care. Most folks don't care as long as it's clear what they're supposed to be.
ReplyDeleteI would love to get those old destroyer models myself, and like you I've prowled for a while now, but their prices are still expensive, especialy because I need it shipped to South Africa if I get any.
ReplyDeleteI will allow those to be played as Thomb blades any day, just make sure they are set a little higher on their stand so they look the same hight.
Our clubs around here also love to play older models in our games, some of them just look so much cooler than the new ones
Got to admit I hate old models with a passion. Not just Necron models but all old 40k models. Though if you wanted to use old models then I wouldn't have a problem with it at all.
ReplyDeleteI'm jumping on the 'use them as Tomb Blades' bandwagon. I picked up 5 for cheap to do that myself. I like the retro feel of it all. As for mixing units, it's not like they're on a smaller base or anything, so why should people mind?
ReplyDeleteWouldn't give a toss. If anything, I'd be quite impressed that you owned enough for a unit.
ReplyDeleteI use the old ones I have as heavy destroyers and damn the consequences!
ReplyDeleteI love them. If given a chance I always use my olde Eldar models instead of new ones. Sort of proof that you have been doing this for a long time. Get as many as you can so you can enjoy the prestige of using them.
ReplyDeleteThank you everyone for the comments, it's really great to get lots of possitive feedback on this, seems like there is a lot of love for old minis, well except from Mark =)
ReplyDeleteMy issue is that I only have old Necron models. Why should I go out and spend $500 on new Necron models just to replace what I already have? Especially when there are so many other new models and games I would like to collect.
