Nick speaking,
With my three Wave Serpents now painted up, it's time for me to revisit my Mechdar list. To be fair, with 6th Edition changing quite a few things up, it's more like starting fresh with this list, rather than a few tweaks here and there. So what to put in my newly painted Wave Serpents? Sadly Howling Banshees are out, but Fire Dragons are still holding up as the main Elites Choice in the Codex. I want to keep the units cheap though, so two
small units of five Dragons for two Serpents it is. The third Serpent is going to have to have a maxed out Dire Avenger unit as usual, with the Exarch
exchanging his dual cats for a power weapon and Shimmer Shield to offer them a
bit more survivability. The third Serpent will also carry my HQ, which will be Eldrad, instead of the usual Farseer. As for the Wave Serpents themselves, I am currently just taking Scatter Lasers with the Shuriken Cannon upgrade, I really can't see the need for Spirit Stones or any of the extra Engines upgrades.
Unfortunately my Falcon and it's small Dire Avenger unit is just going to
have to go in this list. I just cannot seem to justify taking the Falcon
anymore and the small Dire Avenger unit it carried is just not cut out
for the tasks needed in 6th. The tank itself has lost it's survivability and in most missions will not be able to score for me easily. My two Fire Prisms are staying in though, but once again I have dropped all the upgrades except for one Shuriken Cannon, as I had ten points left over at the end. It is amazing how many extra points you get when you dumb down the tanks a bit, which is great, as I now need to pack in some extra troops. Two groups of six Jetbikes with an Embolden Warlock in each will now join my Mechdar list, leaving me with enough points for an annoying group of Swooping Hawks and a single flanking War Walker as a cheap distraction unit.
Here is my final list, any thoughts and comments are most welcome...

The list looks solid enough to me mate, but I would consider dropping the stones on the War Walker and giving both Warlocks Singing Spears are they're dead in combat anyway ;)
ReplyDeleteGood call mate, I always knew the stone was a waste of points, but I couldn't find anything else to spend the last few points on! Totally forgot the Warlocks could take spears. List now changed thanks :D Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
ReplyDeleteI'll be very interested to see how the larger units of Jetbikes work out for you, I'm still using small 3 man units and relying on my Jetbike Seer Council to do all the work.
ReplyDeleteMy regular opponent uses Necrons and I quickly discovered that Falcons are pretty much obsolete in 6th, so like you, I've now switched to Fire Prisms and I'm having a lot more success with them (although I'll be trying a Night Spinner out tonight to see how that fares.
With the changes to 6th I'm finding the biggest problem to be troops for my Eldar, I've tried 10 man Dire Avengers, but with the increased range on rapid fire weapons, I've found them difficult to use and stay alive at the same time.
Please keep us all updated, there are so few active Eldar at the moment, that it makes a refreshing change to read a blog that is persisting with them.
How come you're taking a large unit of Avengers with power weap and bladestorm?
ReplyDeleteThanks, so far the larger bike units are doing well, I have used smaller units and they are great at hiding which really helps them survive, but I have found the larger groups can take a few more shots and still be around (well, if they are fortuned and/or have turbo boosted). Love the Seer council as well, but I am keeping them just for my Saim-Hann Eldar at the moment. I have a battle report with the above list coming up in a few posts, hope you will check it out ;D
ReplyDeleteThe Avengers have just had a promotion, they WILL have to get out of their Serpent now, so no small squads, either by force or for objectives end of game. The Power Weapon/Shield is their to give them half a chance to survive an assault once on an objective (which will be in cover XD), 5++ in CC isn't great, but with Eldar joined giving them fortune, it's the best we can do! Blade storm is their for the usual, Guide/Doom and now Overwatch!
ReplyDeleteI tried the shimmer shield ages ago. Tied up some Terminators in assault for ages, especially with fortune. I also used a unit of 10. Does bladestorm work in overwatch?
ReplyDeleteSubject: [idicbeer] Re: IDICBeer 40k: 6th Edition Mechdar List v1
Yeah, new FAQ says you can, but only if you didn't use it in your turn, will also mean you can't use it next turn if you use it to Overwatch, but then you will either be dead or locked in combat by then anyway. Glad they sorted this, it ended up how I was playing it anyway Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
ReplyDeleteAnother option for the Hawk Exarch (for only 5 points) is Intercept. If the Hawks don't yo-yo, they can attack tanks and then, under the new FAQs, “In assaults, they always treat vehicles, except Walkers, as having Weapon Skill 0”.
ReplyDeleteI like your list. I have also switched back to larger Avenger sqauds at 1500 points.
We've been playing a lot of 1000 point games hereabouts. I don't use bikes, so I have been using 3 x small Avenger sqauds in Serpents as the core; not optimum, but I think I need at last 3 scoring units.
Thanks for the comment, yeah, I made the list before the FAQ, so intercept could be an option now. Not really sure I would get to use it much though, yo yo and annoyance being their priority. Plus line breaker of course. Or if needed I might leave them down as bait to be shot at, at a key moment of the game, they are annoying enough for people to take the bait :D
ReplyDeleteThe troops section is a tough one for Mechdar, with Jetbikes, Avengers and Storm Guardians being the main choices. Not tried Storm Guardians in 6th yet though! Sent from my BlackBerry® wireless device
Makes sense it works only in overwatch or shooting phase.
