Nick speaking,
The first of the Necron C'Tan's to get a New Necron Codex Review is the Nightbringer. This Necron God is an awesome model with a very spooky name. It is the type of model that should make your opponent quiver in their shoes when you place it on the table! But for 365 points, is he really that scary?
The normal point size when I first started playing 40k was 1,500 points, and it was always difficult to fit him into a list at that level. I did however give him a go in some fun only games, and although he was enjoyable to play with, he was just so slow moving to be worth the points unless you managed to position him in just the right place or more importantly, your enemy likes to come towards you!
In fifth edition he does get the added bonus of being able to run, and with a raise in point cost games as the norm of 1,750-2,000, could there be more room for him in my list? Probably yes, but at the moment I am preferring the Nightbringers golden brother, the Deceiver. More on the Deceiver in another post.
Obviously it goes without saying that in close combat the Nightbringer absolutely rocks, but what do we want for our hardest hitting Necron model in a New Codex?
A points cost drop goes without saying, but what about some form of godly teleportation? I would love to have Deep Strike on him, and if I was really greedy, I would want a 3+ invulnerable save! So what do you reckon of the Nightbringer in the New Codex? How will he change?
I think he's pretty decent the way he is. Maybe a points decrease to let him compete with the Deceiver, but no lower than that. As far as internal codex balance goes, the Deceiver is right on. It's a difficult decision on whether or not to take him. Hopefully they keep him balanced against the new and updated other units.
ReplyDeleteAs to external balance, I can't really say. Is 300 points for a 4 wound MC with T8, a 4++, a bunch of high initiative S9 MC attacks on the charge, the ability to ignore invulnerable saves, and a few other nasty abilites like pulling out of CC, forcing Ld tests and redeploying your army fair when compared to 200 points for 5 THSS termies? 15 S8 attacks on the charge (at I1 though), 5 T4 wounds and a 2+/3++?
I agree that the C'Tan need to be kept expensive (to highlight their rarity amd how awesome they are) but I think an increase to 3++ on their save would be OK. A puny marine with a shield should not have a better invuln save than a star god!
ReplyDeleteIn the next codex, the main thing I want is the void dragon and the outsider, however. More C'tan can only be a good thing!
BTW, don't c'tan have 5 wounds not 4?
I think a point drop on the c'tan is a must. Abaddon costs 85pts. less and killes the Nightbringer almost every time they fight that I have seen. I have been playing Necrons from the start in 2002 and sure i can't make a 4+ 75%of the time but I see the same issue with other Necron players. Ya just gotta remember in 3rd edition ya saw a lot less models like C'tan or other special characters, and everyone's special characterscost more then they do now. Being 2 codexs behind has its downs.
